QUICK FACTS ABOUT REFRIGERATED TRANSPORTATION.
It is important to understand how refrigerated trailers and containers work to avoid false expectations and frustration during the cold chain management process. Here are some key facts that are important to know and to keep in mind when you are involved in the transportation of refrigerated freight or perishables in general:
-
Refrigerated trailers are meant and designed to maintain temperature, not to cool or warm products inside them. Although, if you leave a product long enough in a temperature controlled trailer its inside temperature may be slowly modified, reefers are only designed to maintain temperature stable and to remove humidity from the air.
-
Reefer trailers run independently from the tractor hauling them, they have their own fuel supply (fuel tank) and they have their own refrigerating unit and motor. You can leave a trailer running without being connected to a tractor.
-
Although you can commonly find both 53" and 48" reefers in the United States, this does not mean that you can load more freight on a 53' reefer every time. The amount of refrigerated freight you can put on a trailer depends directly on the weight of the cargo, even though there is a little more space on a 53' reefer the weight permitted in the Unites States highway systems does not increase for a bigger trailer.
-
Refrigerated Trailer temperature settings are critical to the well being of the products inside the trailer, there is two ways a unit can operate; Continuous or Cycle Sentry. We will explain the differences between the in an article on our Facebook page so make sure to follow us there, but in the meantime please take on account that Cycle-Sentry should be used only for frozen loads and that it is always good to let your refrigerated carrier know the temperature and settings for your loads every time to avoid damages caused by temperature fluctuation within a trailer.
